words I never said
Kareem Mawass talks about the restricted freedom of speech in certain countries, and how it doesn't allow the individual to express what is on their mind.
Freedom of speech plays an important role in this world. It has helped
mankind settle situations; to communicate with each other, to share knowledge,
settle disputes and to develop as a community. Could you imagine if we did not
have that right in Australia to speak about what we think about? Where would we
be without freedom of speech? Freedom to do one of the most basic things is one
of the most important things in the world, and without it, it would lead to
dreadful problems. In the past, there have been protests that have got out of
control and had led to riots. The fourth president of the United States, James
Madison once stated: “As long as the reason of man continues fallible, and he is
at liberty to exercise it, different opinions will be formed.” What that means
is as long as the connection subsists between his reason and his self-love, his
opinions and his passions will have a reciprocal influence on each other. With
varying opinions and beliefs, our society requires unlimited freedom to speak
about any and everything that concerns us in order to continually improve our
society. Those free speech variables would be speech that creates a positive and
not negative scenario. In both long-terms and short-terms some of us may presume
that because we live in a liberal democracy like Australia, certain personal
freedoms are given, such as freedom of speech and that any imposition on a
person’s speech would be viewed as an attempt to curtail the
freedom.
Equatorial Guinea, Uzbekistan, Burma, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and
Belarus; these countries are said to be the most censored countries in the world meaning they are isolated from the rest of the world. People in those countries are not allowed to have access to other people not in their country. This is because it is the rule in those countries. There are many countries with a
similar problem. Research by CPJ [Committee to Protect Journalist] has confirmed the top four most censored countries in the world are Eritrea, North Korea, Syria and Iran. This has been affirmed by analysis of a CPJ journalist.

The fourth most censored country is Iran controlled by Hassan
Rouhani the president of Iran The government uses imprisonment on journalists to
silence critical news coverage. Since 2009 media has been brutally bashed by a
government onslaught that has included the banning of publications and the mass
arrests and imprisonments of journalists on ant state charges. Imprisoned
journalists are subject to horrible conditions including solitary confinement,
physical abuse, and torture families of journalists are also interrogated and
harassed in to keep them silent. Iran is the same with the other top 3

authorities they block tons of websites , news and social using anti –
censorship programs to detect interference. The authorities sometimes jam
satellite signals especially the BBC Persian language
service.

In Conclusion we understand that freedom of
speech exists in one form or another in politics, social activities as well as
the learning curve What we should learn from that we are lucky to have freedom
of speech in Australia we should use it wisely and don’t abuse the power of
freedom of speech.
